Thirteen-Year-Old Hero
The Yad Eliezer family is made up of individuals of all ages and backgrounds. For example, take Yonah Lerner. He’s only thirteen years old. When you think of thirteen-year-old boys, what comes to mind? Most adolescents are still self-absorbed kids at that age. They play with their friends, complain about their homework, and laugh about the silliest things.
But today Yad Eliezer received a letter from Yonah. His letter might surprise you.
Dear Friends and Family,
On the upcoming event of my becoming a Bar Mitzvah, I have decided
to take upon myself the mitzvah of helping a less fortunate Bar Mitzvah boy
in Israel have his Bar Mitzvah with dignity. Through Yad Eliezer, an
organization which supports Bar Mitzvah aged boys who are very poor, do not
have a father, or other unfortunate circumstances, I will be able to "adopt"
a boy my age, correspond with him, and make sure that he receives a pair of
tefillin, has a modest seudah (meal), and is able to buy respectable, new
clothing for his simcha. I want to know that at least one other, less
fortunate Jewish boy will feel as special as I am going to feel on my Bar
Mitzvah day (G-d willing), and I want to help make that happen.
Through Yad Eliezer's subsidized program, a pair of tefillin is
$500.00, a modest seudas mitzvah is $300.00 and a new suit is $200.00. I
have already started raising tzedakah on my own, but have a long way to go.
I would prefer a donation to this organization instead of a Bar Mitzvah gift
for myself.
I will (bli neder) keep everyone posted as I gradually meet my
goal. If you have any questions, or would like to view Yad Eliezer's
website, you can click here.
The deadline I have set for myself is January 31st being that my own Bar
Mitzvah, (please G-d), will take place on the Shabbos of Parshas Tetzaveh,
Februaury 27th, 2010. Of course any additional donations made after
that deadline will go to Yad Eliezer as well.
Checks can be sent to my home, addressed to Yonah Lerner. The checks should ONLY be made out to YAD ELIEZER and NOT to me, please - with a note on the memo line that says "Bar-Mitzvah Fund". You can also make a donation online on their
web site. Please write in the comment box "In honor of Yonah Lerner's Bar
Mitzvah".
Thank you all so much for helping to participate in this very
important mitzvah. I cannot wait to see you at my Bar Mitzvah.
Sincerely,
Yonah Lerner
Now, who do you imagine that thirteen-year-old kid is going to grow up to be? That’s what it really means to become Bar Mitzvah.
And that’s what it means to be a part of the Yad Eliezer family.
