Seminary Bake Sale

Sunday, December 30, 2012

I never cease to be amazed at people’s creativity and initiate in the ways that they find to help others. Zahava, a seminary girl from Brooklyn studying for the year in Israel felt that she wanted to use her free time for a fun and productive project. After speaking over different options with one of her teachers, Zahava decided to do a bake sale and have the proceeds benefit Yad Eliezer’s wedding fund. She was familiar with Yad Eliezer’s important work from fundraisers in her school back in the States, so the idea appealed to her.

“I’m not so good at baking, but I figured that girls like good food, so there was potential to make money. I figured that if I asked others to help me it would all come together somehow. That’s exactly what happened. I spoke to some of my teachers who agreed to each bake something, as well as a bunch of friends in the dorm. The day before I started to get nervous that it would all be a big flop, but the next morning the cakes and cookies came pouring in, and then the customers followed the heavenly scent.”

At the end of the day Zahava saw that the proceeds were way beyond what she had expected. She was impressed by how eager others were to chip in, and felt good knowing that she was enhancing the joy of an impoverished bride.

You should never underestimate the power of initiative- or of good food!
