Living in poverty looks exactly as you would imagine. Overcrowded apartments house battered, ruined furniture. The family may be hungry, but preparing food is difficult without a stove, an oven, or a refrigerator. For want of mattresses, children are forced to sleep on the hard, cold floor. The family cannot gather together for a dignified meal without a table and several chairs. You’d be amazed what relatively small things like a nice used couch can do for a person’s sense of normalcy and dignity.

Hundreds of Pieces of Furniture and Appliances for the Needy Every Month
Since the inception of this program in 1989, Yad Eliezer has spread the word that used furniture and appliances need not be thrown away. With a simple phone call to Yad Eliezer’s Furniture and Appliance Exchange offices, the furniture or appliance can be donated to a family who would otherwise be unable to afford it. People in need of furniture or appliances call Yad Eliezer’s exchange offices and have their furniture or appliance needs and contact information listed. Donors are then referred directly to those in need to arrange transportation of their used items.
Today, sadly, many offers of furniture and appliances must be refused and many of those in need must be turned away. Yad Eliezer currently lacks the funds to purchase warehouse space to store these items or trucks to transport them directly to the poor. Yad Eliezer dreams of providing on-site job training for at-risk youth by employing them as carpenters and electricians to repair damaged furniture and appliances in such a warehouse.
