Irena, cancer patient
Irena is only 20 years old, and the mother of a beautiful baby daughter. The husband she had once loved was abusive virtually from the day they married. But he had helped put food on the table.
Four months into her pregnancy the terrible pains began. The diagnosis: a malignant brain tumor requiring immediate surgery followed by chemotherapy. But first Irena would have to abort her baby.
Irena refused. She would wait until her child was born. The next day her husband disappeared, leaving her all alone ― penniless and pregnant, with a malignant cancer rampaging in her brain.
Yad Eliezer discovered Irena after she had undergone three brain operations. She had been walking over two miles each way for chemotherapy ― there was simply no money for carfare. Bald, nauseous and exhausted, she would come home to a frigid apartment, a hungry baby, an empty refrigerator, and no energy left for tears.
Now, at least, she can take the bus to the hospital... the apartment is heated... and there is always fresh food for herself and her child. It isn't much. But for Irena it is everything. With Yad Eliezer, someone is finally there to hold her hand. |
