Despite our name, American Friends of Yad Eliezer are not only American. They come from all over the world, from various countries including Israel, Canada, the U.K. and others. And no matter the time of year, no matter how busy our friends are, they never take a break when it comes to chesed, proactively contacting us to offer help to families in need.

So when the phone call came in just a few days ago from one of our steadfast British friends, offering incredibly charitable support for melamdim in time for yom tov, it was fantastic news that brought great excitement - but to be honest, because of his track record, I can’t say we were surprised!

The initiative is providing 110 melamdim with 1000 NIS worth of meat and chicken for their families in time for Sukkos, which is helping to make the holiday truly a Zman Simchaseinu. Located in cities such as Givat Zev, Ofakim, Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, Telz Stone and Maale Adumim, relieved parents are experiencing newfound encouragement as the chag approaches. It’s been a difficult year for so many of them. When I spoke to one of the community representatives we work with, who helps identify households that are really struggling, he couldn’t believe the timing of this tzedaka. “You don’t understand,” he said. “The father of one of the families just came to me...his Talmud Torah shut down a few weeks ago, so he lost his job... they were already having a hard time...he’s been looking for work but hasn’t been successful yet... they were really worried about making yom tov. This help is just...unbelievable for them…”.

It’s thanks to our donor’s extreme generosity and thoughtfulness, that Sukkos is being transformed this year. For these families, and all the others helped through American Friends of Yad Eliezer, “V’Samachta B’Chagecha” will take on a whole new meaning.
