Complete Despair

Dear Milka,

I am sending this letter with my daughter Avital because I have reached a state of complete despair. About a month and a half ago, I had a nervous breakdown – the situation is just so hard.

My husband is in very bad psychological condition and we tried to get him treatment – doctors, medications, injections, all costing a lot of money and not helping at all. He had to be hospitalized. And the entire burden and expense fell on me without any help from anyone.

My water is about to be cut off. They called me from the bank to tell me I have one last chance to pay up my debts before they take me to court.

The social service agency [that partially subsidizes our rent] called demanding that I “take care of” the debt [on our rent], which I have no idea how to begin to “take care of”, or in a month they will evict us from the apartment. The debt is 7,800 shekels.

My youngest son learns in Sulam (a special education program), and for the past month has been displaying major behavioral problems. They advised me to take him to a therapist who charges 180 shekels per session. I don’t know where to begin or where to end.

The financial situation is very hard, and the emotional situation is even harder. Not one member of the [extended] family is willing to help – for them it’s easier to avoid us. I needed to pull my older son out of high school. Because the family does not even ask if I need help, or if I am managing. The situation at home is very hard, especially because I also have to cope with the children.

I would be so grateful if you could help in order to be able to climb out of these many problems.
