Poverty Report 2014 - Yad Eliezer

Latet, a poverty relief NGO published an Alternative Poverty Report recently and the results are very disturbing. 68% of poor people could not afford to use heating, 72.5% of the needy were forced to give up on medicine during the past year because they were unable to afford it, and a quarter of children went to sleep hungry at least a few times per month.

The figures are in, and they are absolutely heartbreaking. The elderly are living without heating as the rain pours down outside, and are unable to purchase medicine and even enough food! Children are going to sleep hungry on a regular basis. The average monthly salary of the working poor is below the legal minimum wage. More and more families are falling into the crushing cycle of debt. As Israel approaches elections it is clear than improving the lot of the poor is at the top of the agenda for hundres of thousands of Israeli families.
