Once again, Yad Eliezer's Back to School Campaign stepped in to fill a crucial need for struggling families this year.
When summer draws to a close, parents of imoverished homes grow increasingly stressed as the days count down to September 1st, the start of the Israeli school year. Struggling to cover basic necessities like food, utility bills or other essentials like dental expenses, they cannot also afford new school supplies for their children and are often forced to forego one for the other. The result is either heightened need inside the home, or an embarrassed child who shows up on the first day with leftover supplies from a sibling or from the previous year, or no supplies at all. And with so many parents currently out of work due to the pandemic plus the High Holidays rapidly approaching, the strain on families is stronger than ever before.
Thankfully, Yad Eliezer's tradition of partnership continued this year, with the Chanan stationery and office supply chain. It enabled us to purchase gift cards at a discount, which we then distributed to families in need. The cards always bring great relief to parents, who are able to purchase their children's school essentials easily, and kids feel just like everyone else, as they pick out brand new items that they will be able to use in the classroom.
This year in Ofakim, Yad Eliezer community representatives pre-purchased supplies from campaign funds and set up a mini Chanan store locally, so families would not have to travel long distances to make their purchases. Children and parents alike were thrilled at the display, as they excitedly and gratefully checked the necessary items off their lists.
Thank you to all our generous friends and donors who know that Yad Eliezer is the Israeli charity at the forefront of poverty relief on so many levels. You helped us make this wonderful campaign the great success it was!
