Lawyers Spend Strike Volunteering for Yad Eliezer

Wednesday, December 22, 2010

A strike protesting inadequate compensation has shelved the professional lives of Israel’s state prosecutors for the past month and a half, but that hasn’t stopped them from fighting for justice.

Attorney Danny Vitman phoned director Hadassah Haviv-Nechushtan of the Jerusalem Municipal Unit for Volunteer Services about two weeks into the strike to ask how he and his colleagues could make a difference. Scanning down the e-mailed list of local volunteering opportunities, Danny phoned hunger relief agency Yad Eliezer to make an appointment for a two-hour visit to their warehouse.

The initial group of eight men and women has since grown to over twenty. Moreover, the initial two-hours has since turned into two weeks. “Every day the lawyers come up to me asking whether they can come back tomorrow. Lama lo, why not?,” laughs Yad Eliezer warehouse director Itzik Stern.

“We create an assembly line to fill big cardboard boxes with food for impoverished families. It’s fun, we have a great time, but knowing that at the end of the day these food boxes go where they are really needed – that feels really good,” says Danny.
