Yad Eliezer is Israel’s largest poverty relief agency. It began in 1980 in the kitchen of the Weisel family in Jerusalem. They prepared a food basket for a neighbor who could not feed her children, and were soon delivering monthly food baskets to hungry families.

Yad Eliezer has now grown to encompass 19 primary economic and social service programs that impact tens of thousands of individuals.

Over 96% of funds raised go directly to needy families. This achievement has yearned Yad Eliezer the

“4 –star exceptional” rating from charity navigator, which rates organizations based on how effectively and responsibly they utilize donations, and to what extent the charity is growing in terms of programs and services.

Yad Eliezer’s mandate is to help families cope with financial difficulties and empower them to break through the cycle of poverty and achieve self sufficiency. Thanks to job training and other assistance, many families who were recipients of Yad Eliezer’s food programs are now donors to Yad Eliezer. All this is made possible through the donations of caring individuals around the world.

For just a $1 a day or R240 per month, Yad Eliezer’s Feed- a -Baby program helps to feed Israel’s hungry infants, to ensure healthy physical and mental development during the critical first months of life. Yad Eliezer provides babies with six boxes of formula every month until the age of 12 to 15 months. As nutritional sensitivities and needs differ between children, the organization selects formula type according to every infant’s individual needs.

A team of 150 volunteers distribute the formula nationwide at no extra cost. Careful evaluation ensures that formula is distributed only to those with no other recourse to feed their infants. This means donations to Yad Eliezer feed the babies who would starve without donations.

Yad Eliezer SA provides beautiful baby gift certificates for donations made. This is a great gift to give a new baby.

Among the other initiatives under the Yad Eliezer banner is the Adopt a Wedding program. As an organization that has been providing food to poverty stricken families in Israel on an ongoing basis for many years, Yad Eliezer knew that, on the occasion of a wedding, more assistance had to be provided. Yad Eliezer also realized that there were certain families that managed somehow to put food on their own tables without resorting to tzedakah, yet making the bare ends meet was by no means an easy feat for them. After being faced with a major financial challenge, such as providing the funds necessary just to make a basic wedding party, many of these families too, would become so depleted and so utterly in debt that ultimately they would find themselves on the receiving end of Yad Eliezer food list as well.

With two subsidized wedding halls of their own that is so much in demand that wedding parties must enter a raffle in order to determine who will benefit from them, Yad Eliezer offers struggling baalei simcha the opportunity of joy without the painful associated pressures. Providing a further hand to kallahs, Yad Eliezer had also paired up with the well known Hachnosis Kallah organization, Yad Gittel, based in Har Nof. Receiving an additional 25% discount to household items given away at cost prices, kallah’s receive vouchers for such items such as pots, pans, linens, dishes, flatware, small appliances and other necessary objects needed to set up a new home.
